Showcases

FA37
For example, two one-sheet rotation hyperboloids, and a hyperboloid gear (as displayed) are on view in FA 37 on the upper floor.

With few exceptions, the exhibits of the collection are located in vitrines at the Mathematical Institute of Göttingen university. The vitrines are divided into showcases which are shortly named as "FA" (coming from the german word "Fach"). They are numbered. FA 1-53 are located on the upper floor, FA 54-61 on the ground floor, and FA 62,63 in the Emmy Noether room in the basement.

For some cases there are corresponding bottom cases without window. Please contact one of the responsable persons if you are interested in one of the models standing in such bottom cases.

Former locations

  • As from 1780 with other collections in the academic museum of the university.
  • As from 1865 in a large hall of the new "Auditoriengebäude". After a while the hall became too small so that parts of the collection were outhoused and got lost later.
  • Since 1929 in the Mathematical Institute. Parts of gyros, and instruments were placed in institute rooms which nowadays are used for other purposes.
